Kicking things off in the dimly lit gloomy surroundings of the Acadamy 2 are Dead Confederate who
have been on tour with The Whigs & with whom they share the same neighbourhood with in Athens
Georgia. They play a sharp short grungy 45 minute set showcasing 10 songs. The certainly save the
best ‘til last with Wrecking Ball & the crowd requested All The Angles.
Just off a whirlwind support to Kings of Leon on their recent tour including a night in Dublin’s O2 last
December The Whigs hit the stage at 9.30 with the venue more crowded. They don’t hang around
& burst straight into the recent single from their latest album “In the Dark” - “Hundred/Million”
followed swiftly with “So Lonely” which gets the front row bouncing a bit more. The Whigs seem
to have an unending supply of energy with front-man Parker Gispert spending most of the gig on 1
leg & a one stage even doing the splits. Definate highlight of the night came when Parker swapped
his guitar for a keyboard & a beer crate to sit on to play “Half the World Away”. Full of gentle
keyboards to start but eventually bursting into a distorsion frenzy with bassist Timothy Deaux also
changing from the norm & playing guitar. Finishing things off tonight is possibly “In the Dark’s” best
song “Someone’s Daughter”.
6/10.
