** Clearing the Head **

There’s nothing like a good walk to clear the head . . . and for that matter, to also rattle the brain and to think of decent article ideas for those wanting to get into the writing and journalism world. For me the best place is a good 45 minute walk from Kilcoole beach along the shore to the Breaches (an old train bridge crossing an inlet) in Co. Wicklow. Even when the weather isn’t the best or it’s a little overcast this is still stunning. The beauty of the surroundings is incredible. There’s the Irish sea on one side and acres of green fields on the other – all in general silence except for the distant birdsong. It’s crazy to think that this is only a stones throw from my front door. There are so many beautiful places in our own country that we all seem to take for granted but with the financial situation at the moment it’s best to focus more on home.

As I’m trying to get into the world of writing and journalism at the moment it’s great to take an hour out every so often just to, you know, settle the head. It brings calm and sometimes brings ideas for articles – like this one – which popped into my head only this morning whilst walking the dogs. I also hope this idea might help those suffering from depression and so forth. Or even for those just wanting a change in their day . . .  to break the monotony of their daily routine.

Ray D’Arcy one said that if you’re ever made redundant the best thing to do with your last €100 is to buy a brand new pair of proper running shoes. I agree with this 100%. Whether it be for walking or running, there really is nothing like it for clearing your hear and for general well-being. It’s almost like a type of meditation in a way. It’s good to spend some time with yourself.

I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Everyone should take the time out, park the car up somewhere and take a saunter along the beach or wherever suits you and take in the beauty of the country around you. A friend of mine who passed away a few years back used to say that ‘you have legs don’t you, now get out into the elements and use them’. And with the country the way it is financially there’s no greater opportunity. Go do it. You won’t regret it.
